Whether you realize it or not, we are all in the same boat—we are all looking for something. We may have different goals and may be driven by different things, but deep inside, we make decisions to work on ourselves and grow for a reason— we want to be happy. This is what we all have in common and everyone does it in their own way which is a beauty of life.
Happiness—a magical word that everyone wants to have in their lives. Some people seem to be doing well with it, whereas others encounter more obstacles and difficulties on their journey. But no worries my friend, obstacles are there for a reason. They are meant to make you stronger and test your passion for life.
Here is my recipe for happiness: make sure you use every opportunity to exercise and strengthen your emotional and spiritual muscles. I am just about to share some simple, yet very effective tools and strategies that will put a real smile on your face, and what’s great about this is that the smile will come straight from your heart! No matter which area of life you are mostly focused on right now, it may be health and fitness, business, family or career (I always say that the real balance does not exist because there is always one area of life that simply requires more attention than others), the following tools will help you feel stronger and have faith in yourself and the Universe. Let’s dive into the ocean of spiritual wellness!
Mind you that when I use words like “spiritual” and “spirituality” I am not referring to any particular religion. As much as I respect all religions, I haven’t figured out mine yet. To me, spirituality is about creating a soulful lifestyle full of meaning, happiness, passion and purpose. It’s also about contribution—by helping others, you feel more fulfilled. However, in order to start creating a meaningful, spiritual work, you first need to get rid of layers and discover your real self. You need to get rid of negative energy inside you and around you, as this negativity can prevent you from achieving a well-deserved spiritual and emotional success. Here’s what I suggest you start doing right now:
It’s easy to say “love yourself” but how to do it in today’s fast-paced world? I always say that self-care and self-love go hand in hand. Treat your body as a temple. Feed it with fresh foods, get committed to learning more about health, move your body (it’s free) and give it some rest when it needs to. Listen to your body and treat it with respect. After all, as Jim Rohn says: “Take care of your body, that’s the only place you have to live!”
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and whenever it comes to achieving your goals, make sure you leave some margins for errors and failures. You can be slow, but persistent. Go for baby steps and celebrate even the smallest success. Celebrate each and every moment whenever you feel like you have made progress. Finally, forget about being perfect. Go for progress—it will make you happy, whereas aiming for perfectiveness will make you feel frustrated and the feeling of fulfillment will never knock on your door.
It’s easy to get mad at someone and judge their decisions and lives, but…wouldn’t it be better to stop for a moment and understand where they are coming from? Maybe you judge your friend because he is “obsessed about making money”. But…maybe he comes from a really poor background and so he jumps at every opportunity to create financial abundance for himself and his family? Maybe he wants to start his own foundation? Or maybe he just likes nice things and wants to drive a nice car, so what?
You see, people have different goals. I remember when I started taking care of my body and attending nutrition workshops, and learning all I could about alkaline diet, healthy eating and fitness. I would work out every day, even the weekends. I stopped going to parties and many of my old “friends” would judge me and laugh at me, because I instead of going for drinks, I would be attending a seminar, going to bed early and be up at 6AM on Sunday, ready to train for a marathon. However, they did not see the fact, that prior to my transformation, I had severe health problems and that I had to change my lifestyle. Besides, as a kid, I have always felt weak and hated physical education classes at school. This is why as an adult, I wanted to change my physique and also inspire others by taking massive action.
To sum up; try to understand where people are coming from and what shapes their decisions. Instead of judging them, give them your support. This energy will come back to you, trust me!
3. Help others.
Like I mentioned previously, if you can contribute to the world, you will be creating spiritual and emotional wellness for yourself (and others). Depending on your time and resources, there are 3 things you can do (you can also do all of them).
You can work as a volunteer, a few hours a week, for your local community. For example, last year I would offer my services as a massage therapist and Reiki healer to a local non-profit organization that helps ex-prisoners, homeless people and people with HIV. For that, you will need some spare time in your schedule, and it works well if you are on a low budget also.
The second thing you can do is to donate money to a cause you wish to support. For example, I myself used to have a serious eye disease and so I like to donate money to organizations that help people cure their eye problems. This year, I don’t have time to volunteer (there was also some commuting and traveling involved as I live outside of the city) and so this year I am more focused on donating some money. Sometimes I may do both.
Finally, the third option is to simply look around you and try to see if there is anyone near you that you can help. Maybe you have an elderly neighbor and you can help him or her with cleaning and shopping. I also believe that you help others, when you work on your body and mind and they see your transformation and get inspired by you (big time!).
4. Observe connections between the body, mind and spirit.
If you are into holistic therapies, like me, you have probably noticed how everything is interconnected. Use it as a reminder. For example, when you neglect your body, you will experience lack of mental focus and emotional imbalance. Also, if you only work on your body, but reject the path of personal development, chances are you may be missing on some motivational tools of self-growth and so your physical transformation success may be in danger.
Create 5 minutes a day to meditate, it does wonders! If you can just sit down for 5 minutes a day, and focus on yourself, you will attend the most important meeting of the day—the meeting with yourself. So important and yet so many of us forget about it. I am very absent-minded by nature and so regular meditation is real bliss for me. I know it may not be easy to begin on meditating, but once you have created a habit, it’s just automatic.
Since, I can relate to a situation where you are just too busy to meditate, or get off track, I wrote a book called: “Five Senses Meditation: Create a Stress-Free and Mindful Lifestyle in Five Minutes a Day” (direct link: http://bit.ly/FiveSensesMeditation ) the book is designed to turn even the busiest and the most active folks into meditation addicts.
5. Create a holistic home spa.
It’s easy…turn on some relaxing music, prepare some healing drinks like herbal infusions or smoothies or vegetable juices, and let the healing party begin…aromatherapy and self-massage is a must-have ingredient and something you can learn from my article: http://www.holisticwellnessproject.com/blog/natural-therapy-spa/aromatherapy-spa-coaching/
6. Be like a kid.
ADMIRE the world, nature and those around you. Make sure you are out in nature at least once a week. Switch off your phone (even though you feel like sharing those magic moments on Facebook and Instagram, you don’t want to get sucked into social media, right?). Breathe in some fresh air and touch the trees. Walk barefoot on a grass or sand. It’s amazing! Plus, nature is FREE! Always has been and always will be!
7. Create your spiritual success rituals.
Start a journal where you just write for yourself and you give yourself some feedback. I also suggest you write down all your goals regularly. Did you know that less than 5% of the population actually writes down their goals? And they typically do it only once a year as a part of their new years’ resolution…I am now in the habit of writing down my goals once a week; I usually do it on Sunday evening as I also use it to plan my week. It helps me be more productive. I call it holistic productivity, and I have a free guide that will show you exactly how to go through the process of achieving your goals while remaining healthy. You can get your free copy from: http://www.holisticwellnessproject.com/free-ebook/giveaway.html
My next goal is to create a habit to write my goals every day, not just once a week. But you see, I went for baby steps. Now, that my new habit is ingrained, I can take it to the next level and join the 1% of the population (or less) that write their goals down once or even twice a day. It helps you stay focused at difficult moments.
8. Whatever you do, give it meaning.
Instead of saying: I want to make this money, or I want to have a sexy body, make it juicy, it will keep you going from the deep inside. Say something like: “I choose to…because …I deserve to…and I will be inspiration for others for years to come”!
9. Forgive and let it go.
Ok, I know that sometimes it may not be easy to forgive someone who hurt you, but, cultivating anger will never help you achieve spiritual wellness. I always use this example to illustrate what I mean: remember when you were a kid or a teenager and you had an argument with a buddy of yours? At that time you hit the roof and vowed to never forgive that dude. Think about it now….how does it feel after 10 or 20 years? You are probably laughing at it! So whatever it is that makes you angry now—simply try to project it to the future. Can you really afford to spend your energy on anger and resentment?
As Reiki principles say: “Just for today I am free from anger, I am free from worry, I am humble, I am honest, I am compassionate about myself and others…” Make it your personal prayer and mantra.
10. Feed your mind and soul with holistic relaxation music.
My phone is full of motivational, inspirational and informational podcasts on topics I am interested in (health, culture, fitness, wellness, personal development, motivation, and spirituality) audio books from NLP coaches like Tony Robbins and…relaxation music. You see, sometimes I just feel like giving my mind some rest. I just let it absorb some healing sounds and let it relax. Music helps us re-connect with ourselves and remain focused on our inner journey.
Here are a few of my favorite relaxation music playlists: http://www.holisticwellnessproject.com/music-therapy/
Alternatively just go to youtube.com or soundcloud.com just type in keywords like: ambient, spa, yoga, focus, meditation, pilates and you will come across many amazing sounds. Soundcloud artists offer many download for free.
Show your loved ones your admiration. A simple text message to a friend or a family member saying: “I am proud of you”, or “You inspire me”, or “Keep doing what you’re doing”, or “You are awesome” can really make someone’s day and …you will experience some positive feeling of spiritual wellness all around you.
Discovering the area of spirituality is really a personal journey, after all everyone is different. I simply put the easiest strategies you can get started with straight away, no matter what your beliefs, religion, or goals are.
People are always looking for something. They want to become their best selves. However, even the healthiest bodies and minds will fail if the soul is not allowed to play its part. One is happy and fulfilled when creating a meaningful and soulful life. Try it—I can guarantee that amazing things are going to happen.
Finally…Take baby steps, be good to yourself and be aware of your energy…!
