This weeks article shall be short, sweet and simple, containing 5 tried and tested ways to instantly boost your confidence. Whether you need to mentally prep for a job interview, a date, or just want a positive start to the day, these are some sure fire ways to make sure you feel and perform your best.
These may seem like common sense, but the question is, are you doing them? If not peruse through these 5 confidence boosters and give them a try.
1. Arms Up and Chest Out
It has been scientifically proven that your posture and stance determine your confidence levels. This little technique is known as the ‘power pose’, and for good reason. As you’re just about to leave your house, or bathroom stall, take 2 minutes to increase your testosterone levels.
It has been shown that striking this pose for just 2 minutes increases your testosterone levels by 20%, which is a pretty decent amount. You won’t start sprouting a beard, but you’ll raise your dominance hormones enough to significantly boost your confidence.
Striking the power pose also reduces your cortisol levels, making you better equipped to handle stressful situations. So, stand tall with your shoulders back and chest out. Raise your arms high above your head and close your eyes. Take ten deep breaths. There you have it, testosterone boosted, confidence increased.
It is psychological; this position evokes dominance (think primates). You could go a step further and start banging your fists on your chest whilst shrieking out a war cry, but it’s not recommended in public.
By striking your power pose you will be acting the way you want to feel, meaning you ooze confidence (note: confidence, not arrogance) and first impressions count. For an amazing talk on how your body language ‘shapes who you are’, check out this TED talk by Amy Cuddy.
2. Dress Your Best
This doesn’t mean you have to wear a suit, cause who the hell wears one of those anymore? I kid, a lot of people still do and if you’re going for a job interview a sharp suit may be your best bet.
However, everyone has their ‘go to’ favorite outfit for a special occasion and if you want to boost your confidence this is the outfit you need to wear.
It pays to take a little more time with your appearance too. For example my dentist always tells me I don’t floss as much as I should (which is true), so for special occasions I’ll floss. FYI, I do brush regularly and have damn good oral hygiene, flossing just isn’t a daily necessity for me.
Find your ‘floss’ moment and make sure you do that. You’ll feel extra prepared to tackle the situation at hand.
3. Motivational Speeches
Find an amazing motivational speech and give it a listen. This is super easy to do nowadays as you can download it to your phone, mp3 player and stream it whilst you’re on the bus, in the car, or watch it on your laptop before you leave the house.
Having somebody else tell you the things you need to hear about how amazing you are, and what you’re capable of is a great way to boost your confidence.
If you are so inclined you can even create your own motivational speech, then speak it back to yourself in the mirror. This makes me think of the Friends episode when Bruce Willis poses in front of the mirror saying ‘you the man’, but it may just be the thing that works for you.
If you want to make things super easy for yourself, get yourself these pre-recorded affirmations that are designed to sink down the subconscious level of your mind using brainwave entrainment technology.
4. Do Good For Others
Whether it is simply letting a car go ahead of you in a traffic jam, paying somebody a compliment, or helping an old lady cross the road; random acts of kindness are fantastic for boosting your self-esteem.
We often become so consumed with our own lives and problems that we don’t see how we may help lighten somebody else’s load. Passing on the positivity will help you snap out of your bubble by seeing how you can help others. Also, you never know what others are going through so even the smallest act of kindness from a stranger can really brighten up their day.
5. Gratitude Journal
This is one of my personal favorites and something I have implemented into daily life. I have a little blue, leather bound diary, which has a page dedicated to each day. Rather than fill it meaningless meetings, schedules, or to-do lists (I have my phone for that), I write myself a ‘pep talk’.
It is something I have found particularly rewarding, especially if I’m having a bad day. Through my constant efforts to be mindful I am able to take my brain out of situations situations, looking at them objectively before I react. My gratitude journal is one of the reasons why. If I ever feel down, anxious or fearful I now take a step back, pick up my journal, think about it for a moment and write myself a little ‘pep talk’.
You can do this on a post-it note right before something important, or you can bring it into daily life. I mean you deserve to feel confident every day not just on special occasions.
Make It a Habit
There you have it, 5 simple ways to instantly boost your confidence. These are all things you can bring into your day if you need an instant boost. But, you can just as easily turn them into habits.
